kwatta

material: performance / multi media
year: 2019

“Kwatta” is a site specific performance developed for #SOKL. #SOKL is a series of decolonial actions in public space. Through artistic actions big & small, a varied group of artists asks pressing questions about the continuations of colonialism today.

The performances take place around an empty pedestal in the city center, which used to carry a colonial monument of Leopold II.

An oversized  jar of chocolate spread of the Kwatta brand travels through the city of Antwerp. “All eyes on Kwatta!” is an old expression in Flemish, meaning that someone or -thing is getting all the attention. But how does the name of a Surinamese region end up as a chocolate brand and in a Flemish proverb? (second video below only in Dutch – subtitles will follow asap)
